Ono Family Residence
更新日:2026年3月13日
A nationally designated important cultural property
Designated: June 23rd 1975
According to surviving family records, the Ono family is believed to have settled in this area around the 17th century, roughly 300 years ago.
The residence is a single-story wooden structure featuring irimoya-zukuri (hip and gable) style thatched roof with low eaves and modest architectural flourishes.
The building has dimensions of approximately 14 metres in length (frontage) and 5.5 metres in depth (beam width)

The building layout
The building layout follows a three room “wide hall” configuration with a dirt floor “doma” flanked with a board floored main hall. The main hall features an irori (sunken hearth), behind which sits an 8 tatami mat room, then a 4 mat board floored room usually used for storage.
The materials used in construction are authentically rustic and local in nature with curved chestnut branches serving as columns and pine being used for the beams. The building is fitted together utilizing a technique using triangular wooden wedges instead of nails.
Built in the early 18th century (around the 1700’s) the Ono family residence serves as a rare well preserved example of a small scale pioneering farmhouse which reflects the lives of the early settlers of the Musashino region.
The Ono family residence was designated as a national important cultural property on June 23rd 1975 (Showa 50). A full dismantling and restoration project was carried out in 1978.
